Good purchase and delivery

I just received my unit several days ago. It was purchased to replace an aging Sears 2 HP compressor, which had mysteriously turned itself on during the night (even though the switch was Off!) and kept running, overheating and filling my home with oily smoke.The purchase and delivery experience was great. I got the free shipping, and was expecting this would take 2-3 weeks on the slow train. I was surprised to get a call from the freight company two days after I ordered it, asking when I wanted it delivered. It arrived in perfect condition.True to market hype, the 6.5 HP rating advertised is actually an overstatement. The label on the unit says it is a 3.2 HP, and that makes sense given the current draw. A true 6.5 HP unit would require a 30-50A circuit, like my Delta 5HP Unisaw. But this unit meets my needs at a good price.Campbell Hausfeld makes this identical unit for a lot of other manufacturers... you'll notice different paint colors, but it's the same unit. Surprisingly, some other manufacturers charge more... as far as I can tell only the paint color and brand sticker is different. Buy this one and save yourself some money.A downside over some of the cheaper units is that you'll need to provide your own electrical cord, air regulator and plumbing from the tank. I purchased Campbell Hausfeld's vertical compressor mount kit direct from their website for about $11. It comes with rubber and metal plates, as well as lag screws and lag shields to safely mount the unit to the floor. I've also purchased a flexible pipe to make the connection from the compressor tank (after a ball shutoff valve) to the rest of the plumbing in my system.The cast iron compressor pump is definitely quieter than my old aluminum one was. The unit operates very smoothly and relatively quietly for a compressor, but it's still noisy.I'll submit an update after I've used the unit for a while, but so far, so good.

Good unit once you get past installation woes

Just purchased this unit at Lowes for $[...] which I think is a great price. I replaced a 15 year old wheel barrow type CH with the same horsepower and CFM rating but only a 30 gallon tank. I need this capacity because I use lots of continuous duty tools like grinders, sanders and air chisels which require high CFM ratings. If your work involves intermittant use tools like nailers, air ratchets, inflators, etc you don't need this much compressor. One of the big reasons I chose this model is that it has a true cast iron pump body. Many others at this price range use aluminum with iron inserts which won't provide the same longevity. This baby will last!Other things I like about it are: smooth, quiet operation, well placed readable pressure guage, large 3/4" air outlet, handy sight window for oil level, smaller belt cage and easily accessable drain cock. So why didn't I give it 5 stars? Here are the flaws:As usual with products made in Asia, the owners manual is almost worthless. Vague installation instructions and print errors in 4 languages - how handy. The book recommends vibration isolators and provides a part number but the number is bogus. No one at Lowes or CH could find the part. I bought some at Graingers that were perfect for $9 each. (BTW, if you want to experience customer service done right, call Grainger's help line. 24-hour operation with true engineers on stand-by to answer questions and do research.) There's a big sticker on the unit with a CH web site and 800 number to call but of course, the web site didn't offer any meaningful information and I got a recording on the phone.The unit is extremely top heavy which makes it very hard to mark holes for drilling the lead sinkers needed to install it. A bolt pattern in the manual would have been very helpful. The manual recommends that you run the unit with open lines for 30 minutes to break it in and then change the oil. Of course it doesn't come with any extra oil and the crankcase may or may not be full when you buy it. The hole for the oil drain screw is flush with the pump body so the oil runs all over the place when you drain it. I tried to add a nipple to extend the clearance so I could catch the draining oil but the threads are metric and I can't find pipe to fit. The manual offers an "EZ Drain" device at an extra price??? Once you have the unit plumbed in, check all the connections for leaks with soapy water, including the factory connections for the regulator manifold and pressure gauge. Mine had minor leaks in both.1 last remark...another reviewer said he left the unit on the pallet when he installed it. If you do this, it's a little difficult to use the tank drain plug (draining daily is a must if you want it to last). Putting the unit on the Grainger isolators gives me plenty of room under the unit to reach the drain and place a drain pan. So the bottom line is this...this is a solid unit that operates quietly, has plenty of power and will last 20 years if properly maintained. Once you get past the intsallation woes, you'll be quite pleased.

I am very pleased with this unit, it is just what I was looking for, powerful and much quiter than I expected it to be. The only downfall is that you need to wire the unit yourself, although if you are handy with electric it is fairly easy to install. The "free" shipping from Amazon is an excellent bargin. I highly recommend this unit.

**Warning** oil level

I purchased one of these units and was very pleased for about 3 months. The unit ran great and was very quiet for a compressor due to the induction motor. Running it indoors you can actually talk over top when its running and hear the other person. At 3 months the unit stopped working and would only hum without kicking on. After replacing with a new unit I was ok for about 3 weeks and the same problem happened. The issue is the oil level. Hitachi supplies a small bottle of 5w-50 oil and the instructions are to fill on a level surface to a point between the notch on the dip stick. The first time I over filled slightly using about 4/5 of the oil supplied. on the second unit I filled to the required level or about 2/3 of the oil supplied. Both units eventually seized. After speaking with a customer service I found out the supplied oil is premeasured and ALL THE OIL SHOULD BE ADDED. I found Hitachi to have very good customer service, the first unit was replaced and the second serviced at no cost. My opinion is this is a very good unit with a small design flaw on the oil pickup system and instructions which should tell you to add all the oil. Also note, when they say don't operate at more than 10 degrees angle, they mean it. The oil will not get to the crank and the unit will seize. This unit is very small, very portable, extremely quiet unit and supplies 4.cfm @ 90psi all of which is a great combination. I would have given 5 stars except for the lost time and effort of not properly addressing the oil issue for this unit. At the end of the day I purchased a dewalt D55146 oil free unit for a backup as jobsite reliability is key for me. I hope the Dewalt performs better over the long run.

Received it broken

I ordered this compressor and was excited to recieve it. UPS does it again. The release valve was snapped off. I will give a full review when I talk to Hitachi and get a new one.Update: Had to pay a machinest to tap out the broken value. Hitachi customer service was awesome and sent me the replacement parts for free but now the compressor is leaking at the plastic hose that uses a preasure fitting to hold it in. I buy a lot of tools and never have had an issue. I would not take my experience as a negetive. Hitachi is great I just got a lemon.

Owned this air compressor for 1 year. Used it to frame and sheath a house, sheath and shingle three roofs and trimming out two complete interiors.My experience is as follows;Framing- Compressor kept up with two Hitachi NR90AE framing nailers providing the nailers were not used in "bump" mode for several consecutive shots.- Barely able to keep up with one Hitachi NR90AE framing nailer in "bump" mode firing several consecutive shots.- Completely unable to keep up running two Hitachi NR90AE framing nailers in "bump" mode firing several consecutive shots.Sheathing- Compressor kept up with two Hitachi NV83A3 coil nailers providing the nailers were not used in "bump" mode for several consecutive shots.- Barely able to keep up with one Hitachi NV83A3 coil nailer in "bump" mode firing several consecutive shots.- Completely unable to keep up running two Hitachi NV83A3 coil nailers in "bump" mode firing several consecutive shots.Roofing (Shingles)- Compressor kept up running one Hitachi NV45AB roofing nailer applying five nails per shingle.- At times would not keep running two Hitachi NV45AB nailers applying five nails per single without waiting approx 45 seconds to fully recharge.Trimming- Compressor kept up running two MT65A4 finish nailers or two NT50AE2 finish nailers.I recently purchased a second Hitachi EC119SA for back-up and will run two compressors when "bump" nailing the large framing and coil nailers.The compressor must operate on a dedicated 15 amp circuit or 20 amp circuit. Due to the oil lubricated pump the compressor can not operate on more then a 10 degree angle.I have not used the compressor in temperatures below 48 degrees so I can not comment on the reported poor cold starts. I do know other name brand oil lubricated compressors also experience poor cold starts.So far for the money I had good luck running these compressors!

Solid Trim Compressor

I have used this compressor now for about three months. I am pleased with it's performance so far. The only main drawback is that it is quite heavy. This is made easier by the fact that the compressor can be split in two for transportation and other applications. The twin one gallon hotdog tanks can be separated from the motor and half gallon tank. You can have up to three different guns running at two different pressures (two from one pressure, one from another). This is really helpful when you are using different guns for different applications. Overall I am very pleased with this compressor and would recommend it to someone looking for a contractor grade trim compressor.

It was banged up a bit, but still works good.

When the compressor showed up at my door, it had taken quite a beating from shipping. Using a mallet, I was able to straighten out the parts that were bent. However, the compartment that holds the air filter was cracked. I ended up just ordering a replacement part because it was so cheap (cost about $5 plus shipping). Once I get it installed, it should be in good condition again. Now, this is all because the item wasn't packed well enough. Ok, enough about the seller and shipping issues.As for the compressor itself, I love it (this is why I rated more stars than not). I was able to fill the tanks, speparate them from the motor, and take it inside my house for some repair work. Quietest method. My kids that were sleeping could keep sleeping because there was not a motor to turn on. I have plenty of air in the 5 gallons (combined tanks) of air. I mostly used it with a brad nailer, but I did use the occasional direct air blowing to dust things off. I was able to do this because of the two air connections available on the front that are connected to the tanks. There is a third connection tied to the motor section had I needed another connection where I left the motor.Anyways, I highly suggest this system. It has worked flawlessly so far for me. If it does fail or have an issue, I update this review. Todays date: 2/25/13

Two defective units

Occasionally you have real trouble with an item and that's what happened here. I ordered one of these and about a week later it arrived. The packaging is awful, it was shipped in a box twice the size of the item and there was very little packing material to hold it in place inside the oversized box. The delivery guy literally rolled it end over end off the truck. I could hear the compressor flop from a standing position to a laying position inside the box. Undeterred, I opened the box and took out the compressor (only a couple dings from shipping, not anything returnworthy), and plugged it in. It started and filled fine, but made a very loud hissing sound once full. With this hissing sound the compressor lost about 25 pounds of air (the gauge went from 150 to 125). I let the air out with an air nozzle attachment, but the compressor would not start again. I realized that every time the compressor runs, the fuse on the back would trip and it would not restart. I immediately called and arranged for a replacement compressor. To make a long story short, the replacement compressor was exactly the same as the first one. Same delivery, same packaging, same problem. I had read somewhere that these compressors really draw a lot of power when they first start, so I took it to my neighbors house, in case my electrical wasn't up to the task. We experienced the same problem in his garage. We tried several different outlets in both his home and mine and always the same result, we had to reset the breaker on the machine. If it worked, this would be an awesome machine! Unfortunately it wouldn't work... I gave it two stars because as usual the replacement and return through Amazon was totally hassle free. Honestly this is the only reason I considered buying a factory reconditioned item over the internet..

I loved how quiet this compressor was... note was... until the motor smoked.. karen- did you already throw yours away.. I am in need of a motor... my unit was barely used.. one day I went to do a light amount of air tool work and started to smell burning wires. thankfully the house breaker blew.

Broke, twice [Updated 25OCT2012]

When it works, it works fine. Powered two different brad nailers and a spray finishing system for light use on furniture.After 40 hours of use with the nailers it broke. Before that it gave my Father in law additional service without issue. The motor ate the drive belt, presumably after a small slip. There was a "Service Advisory" on it, which cost $30 of parts, and the owner gets to fix it, himself. Guess it was a known problem with a relief valve that backed up the system, forcing an overpressure on the piston, thus the slip of the belt. Bought service kit, Fixed it. Not ten hours of use later (three months actual time), the pin connecting the crankshaft to the piston sheared. Breaking two times, and it was going to be a new motor, $120, to fix that one. No thank you.I'd give it Zero stars if Amazon would let me.Last week I bought a Dewalt 15-gallon, DEWALT D55167 1.6 HP 200 PSI Oil Free High Pressure Low Noise Horizontal Portable Compressor, which was equivalent in size, hoping the next compressor system wouldn't end up being another disposable purchase. We'll see how it goes. The price on the DeWalt has dropped significantly since I paid $480 on Amazon for it. It smells some times, but it works very well. If you don't need a portable version, the former race car mechanic I work with now, uses a Craftsman stationary one. His 30 gallon system was $300 when he bought it around 2002, or so he says. He hasn't had to do any work on his system, and he uses it much more than I do, as he rebuilds muscle cars on the weekends. He recommended DeWalt or Rigid for portable systems. I passed on the Rigid portables. They too are built by Campbell Hausfeld. No thanks.

Don't buy this

I bought the 20 Gal. model. My previous compressor lasted 20 years. This one is destroyed after 1 year and a half.The piston exploded out of the motor. The waranty is only a year and the service center practicaly said it is disposable because it is oilless. I will never buy from this company again.
